The International Center for Education of Journalists

What is ICEJ?

The International Center for Education of Journalists
in Opatija, Croatia, was founded in the summer of 1998 as a self-supporting, non-governmental and non-profit making organisation. Its main objective is training journalists and improving their professional skills.

ICEJ deals with issues ranging from the ethics, biased and unbalanced reporting to computer-based reporting and the new media. As a non-profit making organisation, ICEJ is regarded by many international institutions as the ideal venue to tackle these complex issues, as independent journalism continues to develop in Eastern and Central Europe. In its first three years, ICEJ hosted some 80 seminars attended by 2000 participants from no less than 40 countries (not including Croatia).

Workshops, conferences and training programmes have been focusing upon different aspects of journalism and tackling the issue of relations between the media and various social phenomena. In most cases, ICEJ itself acted as organiser or provided support to the organisers. With some, ICEJ has established long term co-operation and has therefore become a training centre for a series of workshops.

Alongside regular activities, ICEJ provides logistics and PR services for a huge number of multilevel events. ICEJ is the distinguished member of the South East European Network for the Professionalisation of the Media. Since it is now one of the most influential media training facilities in the country, ICEJ continues to encourage and support the professional development of journalists in the region. ICEJ is housed in a beautiful building in the very centre of the historic resort of Opatija. Several fully-equipped lecture rooms are available throughout the year. The mild Mediterranean climate provides a perfect working environment.
